Ertapenem is indicated for the treatment of patients with the following moderate to severe infections caused by sensitive strains of the bacteria described below. (1) Secondary abdominal infection: caused by Escherichia coli, Clostridium, Eubacterium tardus, peptostreptococcus, Bacteroides fragilis, Bacteroides gilli, Bacteroides ovoides, Bacteroides polyformis or Bacteroides monoformis. (2) Complex skin and accessory infections: caused by Staphylococcus aureus (only methicillin-sensitive strains) Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, and peptostreptococcus. (3) Community-acquired pneumonia: caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (only penicillin-sensitive strains, including cases of Chemicalbook with bacteremia), Haemophilus influenzae (only -lactamase negative strain) or caused by Mora catarrura. (4) Complex urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis: caused by Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae. (5) Acute pelvic infection, including postpartum endometritis, abortion infection, and postoperative infection in obstetrics and gynecology: caused by Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli, Bacteroides fragile, porphyromonas saccharinosa, peptostreptococcus or Prevotella diplex.
