Stability
Ferrous oxide belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and is a white or light green powder. The lattice constants a0=0.3258nm, c0=0.4605nm. It is prone to oxidation in the air and turns red brown. Quickly dissolve in dilute acid to form ferrous salts. It is a strong reducing agent in alkaline solutions. If fine ferrous hydroxide powder is sprayed into the air, it immediately burns and emits sparks. Relative density 3.4. Decompose when heated. Insoluble in alkaline solutions, insoluble in water, and soluble in ammonium chloride.

The manufacturing of ferrous hydroxide usually involves adding alkali metal hydroxides to ferrous salt solutions. Due to their susceptibility to oxidation, it must be carried out in an inert atmosphere (such as nitrogen or argon). Although pure Fe (OH) 2 is white, it changes from green to dark green when oxidized.
Method 1: Prepare a dilute aqueous solution of ferrous sulfate and sodium hydroxide by boiling water thoroughly to remove the dissolved air. Put the ferrous sulfate solution into a small mouthed bottle and add sodium hydroxide aqueous solution to it, making it exactly one full bottle. When the liquid level is insufficient, water can be added to remove air, and then sealed and temporarily placed.
After the ferrous hydroxide precipitates at the bottom of the bottle, use a siphon to slowly extract the upper clarified liquid, and then slowly add boiled water along the bottle wall. Repeat this operation until the SO2-4 ions are washed clean. If the washing time is too long, there is a risk of hydrolysis in the sediment, so the operation should be fast. The upper clarification solution containing white precipitates can be discarded, filtered in an argon or nitrogen gas stream, and then dried. Quickly pack into a glass bottle with a stopper and store it sealed.
Method 2 uses pure ferrous sulfate FeSO4 · 7H2O crystal (as large and transparent as possible), and dissolves it in boiled and cooled water without oxygen under the condition of pre blowing nitrogen gas. A concentration of approximately 1.6mol/L is recommended. Prepare approximately 10L of concentrated sodium hydroxide aqueous solution. This solution is prepared with oxygen free water. Under stirring, add sodium hydroxide solution dropwise to the ferrous sulfate solution, precipitate and settle, then use a siphon to suck out the upper layer of clarified liquid, and wash repeatedly with oxygen free water. Filter and dry at room temperature. The entire operation process should be carried out in pure nitrogen gas. As long as it comes into contact with air, the contact area will change color
