Pirenzepine hydrochloride is a selective anticholinergic drug with a high affinity for muscarinic receptors in gastric parietal cells, but a low affinity for muscarinic receptors in smooth muscle, myocardium and salivary glands. Therefore, it can only inhibit the secretion of gastric acid when applied in general therapeutic doses. There are few side effects of other anticholinergic drugs on pupils, gastrointestinal smooth muscle, heart, salivary glands and bladder muscles.
